Following the success of our World Literature course, this high school class invites students to step into the rich and atmospheric world of British literature through carefully selected living books. Rather than working through dry excerpts or anthologies, students will experience full, beautiful works that have shaped the English literary tradition.

This Charlotte Mason-inspired course emphasizes immersive reading, thoughtful conversation, and great stories. Throughout the year, students will explore beloved classics such as works by Jane Austen, adventure stories by Tolkien or C.S. Lewis, gripping page-turners like Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and other carefully chosen selections that bring the heart of British storytelling to life.

Students will engage deeply with literature through:

• Shakespeare read-alouds, allowing the plays to unfold as they were meant to be experienced - aloud and shared together

• Individual author studies, giving students the opportunity to explore the life and voice of a British writer who interests them

• Socratic discussions that invite reflection on character, themes, and the deeper ideas behind the stories

• Creative illustration projects, where students visually interpret scenes, symbols, or themes from the literature

• Engaging peer conversations that bring new perspectives to the books we read

Students will also complete a monthly sample that can be submitted to their charter schools if needed.

Above all, the goal of this course is to help students fall in love with the beauty, wit, and atmosphere of British literature, while growing as attentive readers and thoughtful thinkers.

Mrs. Mackie and Mrs. Scotti are back with another exciting Hands on History class through literature and hands-on projects. This class takes a Charlotte Mason/Classical approach with living books and a handicraft project to take home each week, with some narration copywork, depending on each child’s age or ability. Claire and Rebekah teach World History in the classical style, 4 year rotation: Year 1 Creation to the Greeks (Ancients), Year 2 Rome to the Reformation (Medieval), Year 3 Explorers to 1850 (Early Modern), and Year 4 1850 to the Present (Modern). American History is interspersed throughout, when it occurs in the chronological timeline. Students can enter this rotation at any time. This time we will “travel” around the world, beginning with Ancient Rome and ending with the Reformation in Europe. Kids will learn about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, seeing God’s plan for redemption, happening in the perfect time in history! Then they will explore the launch of the Church, the exciting world of Vikings, kings, queens, castles, knights, scientists, artists, and much more (year two of the classical history rotation).

Registration in the class includes a literature list with a compilation of the best living books to read to your children, to enforce the historical concepts at home. The idea is that, rather than reading about dry dates, events, and wars in a textbook, historical events come alive, as kids read (or listen) about children and adults who lived through these times and learn what their everyday lives entailed.

After the success of our high school Living Books literature class, we are excited to bring a similar experience to younger students. This Charlotte Mason inspired course introduces children to the joy of great books while gently connecting literature with the sweep of history.

Although this class can complement any home education model, it is designed to complement our Hands-On History class or any Year 2 Classical history program (Rome through the Reformation), this class invites students to encounter history through carefully chosen living books, stories that are rich, engaging, and beautifully written.

Students will read wonderful children’s literature at home, ideally read aloud together as a family, though many students may read independently. Class time provides the community element of a Charlotte Mason education, giving students the opportunity to discuss great stories with peers and bring them to life through narration, conversation, and creative projects.

In class, students can expect:

• Lively discussions about the week’s reading

• Narration and storytelling

• Creative projects, crafts, and activities inspired by the stories

• Connections between literature and the historical time periods being studied

Students will enjoy beloved works such as an introduction to Shakespeare using Shakespeare Can Be Fun, Miss Riley’s favorite retelling from The Arabian Nights, and many other carefully selected living books that spark imagination and curiosity. As students talk about the people and cultures they encounter in these stories, history becomes vivid and memorable.

The goal of this class is to cultivate a lifelong love of reading while helping children see history as a collection of fascinating stories about real people and places. Families will also receive a thoughtfully curated literature list that beautifully complements their history studies and can enrich reading for the whole family.
