Elementary Literature - Living Books Through History
- Apr 1
- 2 min read
Instructor: Riley Mackie
After the success of our high school Living Books literature class, we are excited to bring a similar experience to younger students. This Charlotte Mason inspired course introduces children to the joy of great books while gently connecting literature with the sweep of history.
Although this class can complement any home education model, it is designed to complement our Hands-On History class or any Year 2 Classical history program (Rome through the Reformation), this class invites students to encounter history through carefully chosen living books, stories that are rich, engaging, and beautifully written.
Students will read wonderful children’s literature at home, ideally read aloud together as a family, though many students may read independently. Class time provides the community element of a Charlotte Mason education, giving students the opportunity to discuss great stories with peers and bring them to life through narration, conversation, and creative projects.
In class, students can expect:
• Lively discussions about the week’s reading
• Narration and storytelling
• Creative projects, crafts, and activities inspired by the stories
• Connections between literature and the historical time periods being studied
Students will enjoy beloved works such as an introduction to Shakespeare using Shakespeare Can Be Fun, Miss Riley’s favorite retelling from The Arabian Nights, and many other carefully selected living books that spark imagination and curiosity. As students talk about the people and cultures they encounter in these stories, history becomes vivid and memorable.
The goal of this class is to cultivate a lifelong love of reading while helping children see history as a collection of fascinating stories about real people and places. Families will also receive a thoughtfully curated literature list that beautifully complements their history studies and can enrich reading for the whole family.
