Hands on History: This class takes a Charlotte Mason/Classical approach with living books and a handicraft project to take home each week, with some narration copywork, depending on each child’s age or ability. Claire and Rebekah teach World History in the classical style, 4 year rotation: Year 1 Creation to the Greeks (Ancients), Year 2 Rome to the Reformation (Medieval), Year 3 Explorers to 1850 (Early Modern), and Year 4 1850 to the Present (Modern). American History is interspersed throughout, when it occurs in the chronological timeline. Students can enter the rotation at any time, but next school year is the perfect chance to begin at the beginning, as students will be back in year one, learning about how the Old Testament stories fit into the big picture of Ancient History. It is one of Mrs. Scotti’s and Mrs. Mackie’s favorite years, as students can see God’s hand working in the lives of His people. Registration in the class includes a literature list with a compilation of the best living books to read to your children, to enforce the historical concepts at home. The idea is that, rather than reading about dry dates, events, and wars in a textbook, historical events come alive, as kids read (or listen) about children and adults who lived through these times and learn what their everyday lives entailed.
